Want a Greener Lawn, but don’t know where to start?

What to feed your lawn and when can be confusing. Scotts® 4 Step® Program at Crouse Lumber will help you get that yard worthy of cookouts.

One of the most important things you can do for your lawn is to fertilize it. A well-fed lawn is healthier, which means it has a better root system to combat heat, cold, drought, mowing, foot traffic, and other stresses. While feeding your lawn once a year will improve its condition, feeding it 4 times a year will make it even healthier and more beautiful. Turn your lawn into the best on the block by putting it on this fertilizer schedule. (Be sure to follow all label directions.)

Early Spring - Step 1® Crabgrass Preventer Plus Lawn Food

Why feed:

Your lawn wakes up hungry in the spring! Fertlizing it strengthens roots and gets it off to a good start.

Timing:

Apply off the season with Step® 1. Apply in early spring, anytime between February and April when temperatures are still cool (under 80F). Step® 1 prevents crabgrass before it can germinate. It also feeds to green up a winter-weary lawn, too.

Late Spring - Step® 2 Weed Control Plus Lawn Food

Why feed:

By this point your grass is busy and using up stored energy, so you need to keep it well-nourished.

Timing:

Apply Step® 2 in late spring, anytime between April and June, but be sure to wait 4-6 weeks after applying Step® 1. It kills many broadleaf weeds like dandelions, while feeding and nourishing the lawn. Step® 2 builds thick, green turf from the roots up.

Summer - Step® 3 Lawn Food with 2% Iron

Why feed:

Summer is tough on grass, thanks to heat, drought, foot traffic, and insects. Fertilizing helps protect and strengthen it.

Timing:

Give your lawn a mid-season boost with an application of Step® 3. Apply in the summer, between June and August. Step® 3 feeds and strengthens the lawn against heat and drought, guaranteed.

Fall - Step® 4 Fall Lawn Food

Why feed:

Your lawn is looking for the nutrients it needs to recover from summer damage while getting ready for its winter nap. Doing your fall lawn fertilization now will strengthen roots and increase nitrogen storage for a healthy, green lawn next spring.

Timing:

Step® 4 can be applied 4 to 6 weeks after Step® 3, between August and November. It greens up the lawn now, and helps strengthen and protect it for a better lawn next spring.
